Almost 40 miles Northwest of the Phoenix Metropolitan area is a small rural elementary school district which consistently strives toward maintaining high, educational standards.

Along with Morristown School's many other accomplishments, it was recognized as a visual arts model school district by the Arizona State Department of Education, which also identified this district as a replication site for foreign language programs.

The Morristown Gifted Program has been used as an example for other small districts. Morristown School is listed in the Promising Practices book as a model K-3 at risk program site by the Morrison Institute, commissioned by the Arizona State Legislature.

In order to continue to provide the best possible service to the students of the district, Morristown Elementary has added to its after-school services a program focused on children in kindergarden through eighth grades. This program provides after-school activities for youth in a community with no other youth activities. At the same time it gives students skills they can use throughout their lives. This program was funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education, Safe and Drug Free Schools Act, and small district funds through the office of Dr. Sandra Dowling, Maricopa County School Superintendent, as well as School to Work funds in the area of the Arts originally. We are no longer funded by the U.S. Dept of Ed and other funding has reduced drastically. We are using Extra Curricular Tax Credit Funds to keep this and other programs open after school.

The "Center" includes a state of the art computer facility which is networked throughout all of the classrooms in the school rather than being concentrated in one computer lab. Not only are these resources available to students of all ability levels and needs in the after school program, from 3:45 (when school ends) until 5:00, they will also be used during the school day as an adjunct to regular classroom activities.

Activities include, but are not limited to, utilizing state of the art software in the areas of the Arts, mathematics, language arts, critical thinking, life skills, and technology skills, including digital cameras, disk burners, etc. Emphasis is placed on substance abuse prevention, conflict, resolution, healthy lifestyle choices, and student self-esteem. In school year 2000-2001, the School to Work Component was continued in the program in the area of the Arts. Students worked with the Phoenix Conservatory of Music came on campus in the past, to the after school programs and gave a special School to Work Program in the area of Music. They also presented a staff development on this topic to teachers.
CLICK HERE and you can see a backdrop our children did for the Orchid Society of Arizona. This complements the after school Technology/Arts/School to Work program.

Students receive assistance from the certified teacher on duty or a qualified instructional aide. Skills taught in the classroom may be taught using different methods than in the regular classroom. Parent and community volunteers are also invited to assist.

Thanks to E-Rate, School Facilities Board and other funds, all the Classrooms are wired to the Internet and can communicate by email.
