The following is a partial listing of scholarships made available each year to high school and college students. This list is not exhaustive and criteria and/or deadlines may change without notice. It is the responsibility of the student to verify all scholarships prior to applying. For your convenience, scholarships in black have been updated for the 2009-2010 school year. 1. Inez Kempt Memorial Scholarship

2. Dr. Michael LaFerla Orthodontic Team Scholarship

4. Quigley Christian Athlete Scholarship
Eligibility: Seniors interested in ministry, participate in school athletic programs, and demonstrate leadership and good moral character.

5. George Washington Carver Scholastic Scholarship: (www.nps.gov/gwca)
Eligibility: Be pursuing study in one of the following disciplines: Science, Art, Agriculture, Music or Bible, attend an accredited college within 75 miles of George Washington Carver National Monument or attend Iowa State University or Tuskegee University. If selected as a finalist, applicants must complete an interview.
Amount: $250 per semester

Eligibility: Any Southwest Missouri graduating student or post-secondary student with learning disabilities who can meet post-secondary entrance requirements.

8. Daybreak Rotary Club Scholarship

9. Eagle Picher Scholarship Program
Criteria: Dependant of Eagle Picher employee or retired employee; senior with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four year college, university, or voational-technical school. Applications available in the Guidance Office.
Amount: $3,000
Deadline: March 31, 2009
10. Students For Life Scholarship (Community Blood Center of the Ozarks)
Criteria: High school seniors who are involved in the organization of their high school blood drives; submit a participation sheet and essay

1. Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
Youth leadership program sponsored by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. TLT provides an opportunity to learn more about the area and the importance of community service. TLT brings students together with business and community leaders to identify and discuss community issues, leadership, and career opportunities; five sessions
Criteria: Senior, outstanding academically, effective leader in community and/or school activities with an interest in furthering his/her knowledge of the Joplin region.
Deadline: September 11, 2009 (Interviews will be held at CHCS)
2. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
Criteria: Recognizes students in grades 5-12 for volunteering service in their communities. Complete an online application and submit to Mr. Lewis by November 2, 2009. Application can be found at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential. When asked for the access key, type the word "spirit". A committee will review all applications submitted and select two Local Honorees and up to four runners-up. The top high school volunteer in each state is named State Honoree in February, and two to ten runners-up in each state are named Distinguished Finalists. Ten of the State honorees are named America's top youth volunteers of the year at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in May.
Amount: State Honorees receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. National Honorees receive additional $5,000 awards, engraved gold medallions, and crystal trophies for their schools. They also receive $5,000 grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

3. Wendy’s High School Heisman Award
Criteria: Senior men and women, a minimum of a "B" grade average and participation in at least one of the 33 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools. Interested students should apply at www.wendysheisman.com. Applicatns should apply early because each online application must be reviewed and confirmed by a CHCS representative. School Winners (one male and one female) will be announced in mid-October. State Finalists will be announced in late October, with State Winners determined in mid-November.
Amount: Varies by level; School Winners receive a $10 Wendy's Gift Card and a Wendy's High School Heisman patch; higher awards up to $2,500

4. Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest
Criteria: Available to students in grades 9 – 12, prepare a 3-5 minute original essay and then record on an audio cassette. Essays on assigned theme. More information is available in the Guidance Center.

5. Contest: First Freedom Student Competition
Criteria: National essay contest open to students in grades 9-12. This year's topic is George Washington's famous statement about "mere" toleration. Students will identify the basic principles of religious liberty espoused in this primary document and will further research and assess how well the United States has lived up to Washington's ideal. In addition to the monetary award, the first-place winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Rhode Island in mid-August 2009 for the annual VIP reading of President Washington's historic letter. 6. Contest: What the United States FLAG Stands For
Criteria: Students in grades 7 - 12. Essay contest of 350 words on "What the United States Flag Stands For." For more information go to www.fra.org/essay.
Amount: Grand Prize of $15,000 savings bond; plus 18 National Awards and Regional and Local Prizes

7. Oratorical Scholarship Program - A Constitutional Speech Contest (American Legion Scholarship Programs: www.missourilegion.org)
Criteria: The student must be unmarried and a descendant of a veteran with at least ninety days of active service.
Amount: $1,400 - $2,000 in State winners; $1,500 - $18,000 National winners

9. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award
Criteria: Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit including, but not limited to starting a small business, participation in organizations such as DECA, FBLA, Junior Achievement and The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship; working part-time at a family-owned or other small business

Criteria: Federal aid program based on Pell eligibility. Open to juniors and seniors. Must have 3.0 GPA, full time student with a major in math, science or computer science.
Application: Complete FAFSA. Determination of eligibility will be based on federal eligibility requirements including major of study.
L. Academic Competitive Grant
Value: 1st year $750, 2nd year $1300. (cannot not exceed costs). Check National SMART Grant for junior and senior year scholarships.
Criteria: Federal aid program based on Pell eligibility - must have completed a rigorous H.S. program as a full time student, 3.0 GPA and U.S. citizen.
Application: Complete FAFSA. Determination of eligibility will be based on federal eligibility requirements including major of study.
M. Performance Awards
Value: $50 to full scholarship -some may be renewable
Criteria: High potential in forensics, foreign language, journalism, music, mathematics, theatre, Athletics, etc.

6. Danforth Scholars Program (Washington University, St.Louis, MO)
Criteria: Senior with outstanding academic performance and exceptional commitment to community service, leadership and personal achievements that set the student apart from his or her peers. An individual who has substantive knowledge of the student's dedication to community and academic life must nominate the student. When a student has been nominated, the nomination committee will notify the student and provide application materials, which must be returned by January 15, 2010. The nominator must submit the appropriate form with a letter of nomination by October 15, 2008. Interested students see Mrs. Kruse in the Guidance Center.

7. The Chancellor's Scholarship, Missouri S&T (formerly MU at Rolla)
Criteria: Upper 10% of class after six semesters or have a GPA of 3.75 or better; ACT by October 24 with a score of 30 or better, or SAT score of 1410 or better; strong leadership skills through school and community activities; resident of Missouri.
Amount: $12,000/year, renewable

1. John Dennis Scholarship
Criteria: Students must be seniors who intend to pursue a criminal justice career and attend a Missouri college or university. Senior must have a 2.0 GPA, show financial need, and write a paragraph detailing his/her goals ten years after high school graduation. A. Missouri Teacher Education Scholarship
Criteria: be a Missouri resident, be a high school senior, or a freshman, sophomore or returning adult student at a community college or at a four-year college or university in Missouri; rank in the top 15 percent of your high school class or score in the top 15 percent on ACT or SAT; attend an approved teacher education program at a four-year college or university in Missouri. Recipients must remain enrolled in a four-year teacher education program and are required to teach in Missouri public schools for five years. Otherwise, the scholarship converts to a loan and the state’s portion must be repaid.

B. The Missouri Minority Teaching Scholarship Program

D. The Urban Flight and Rural Needs Scholarship
Criteria: Be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Missouri; be a high school senior with a 2.5 GPA; selection based on GPA and financial need. Recipients must earn a Missouri teaching certificate and teach for up to eight years in a Missouri public school with a higher than average “at-risk student population.”

7. Department of Natural Resources Environmental Education Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior and Missouri resident with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, planning to enroll as a full-time student in a Missouri post-secondary institution. Qualified candidates must be pursuing a degree in one of the following areas of study: Civil, chemical, mechanical, agricultural engineering or environmental engineering, or environmental areas such as geology, biology, wildlife management, planning, some aspect of natural resource management or a closely related field.
