The following is a partial listing of scholarships made available each year to high school and college students.   This list is not exhaustive and criteria and/or deadlines may change without notice.   It is the responsibility of the student to verify all scholarships prior to applying.  For your convenience, scholarships in black have been updated for the 2009-2010 school year.  Scholarships in gray have not been verified for the current school year.  Check the list regularly for updates. 

 

I.  Local Scholarships

 

1.  Inez Kempt Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:   CHCS graduating senior

Application:   Available in the Guidance Office

Amount:   $500

Deadline:  May CHCS

 

2.  Dr. Michael LaFerla Orthodontic Team Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a current or former patient of Dr. LaFerla, 3.0 GPA, community participation, and financial need.   Applications available in the Guidance Office.

Amount:  Approximately $1,500

3.  Flying J Scholarship: (www.flyingj.com)

Eligibility: Academic performance and honors, leadership, school, community and work activities and financial need, minimum GPA 3.0+.

Application: Available in Guidance Office

Amount:   $2,000

Deadline:  March 1st CHCS postmark

 

4.  Quigley Christian Athlete Scholarship

Eligibility:   Seniors interested in ministry, participate in school athletic programs, and demonstrate leadership and good moral character.

Application:   Online @ http://www.cfozarks.org (scholarship application for 2010-2011 will be available for download in early February 2010)

Amount:   $500

Deadline:  Early March

 

5.  George Washington Carver Scholastic Scholarship: (www.nps.gov/gwca)

Eligibility: Be pursuing study in one of the following disciplines: Science, Art, Agriculture, Music or Bible, attend an accredited college within 75 miles of George Washington Carver National Monument or attend Iowa State University or Tuskegee University.   If selected as a finalist, applicants must complete an interview.

Amount:   $250 per semester

6.  Linda Ekiss Memorial Scholarship: (www.ldaozarks.org/scholarship/index.html)

Eligibility: Any Southwest Missouri graduating student or post-secondary student with learning disabilities who can meet post-secondary entrance requirements.

Amount:   $500

Deadline:  April 15, 2010

 

7.  Southwest Missouri Bank Scholarship

Eligibility:   CHCS graduating senior

Application:   Available in the Guidance Office

Amount:   $500

Deadline:  May 4, 2009

 

8.  Daybreak Rotary Club Scholarship

Criteria:  Demonstrate academic ability, involved in community or school extracurricular activities, and financial need.  Applications available in the Guidance Office

Amount:  Two at $500

Deadline:  April 9, 2009

 

9.  Eagle Picher Scholarship Program

Criteria:  Dependant of Eagle Picher employee or retired employee; senior with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four year college, university, or voational-technical school.  Applications available in the Guidance Office.

Amount:  $3,000

Deadline:  March 31, 2009

 

10.  Students For Life Scholarship (Community Blood Center of the Ozarks)

Criteria:  High school seniors who are involved in the organization of their high school blood drives; submit a participation sheet and essay

Amount:  $500 (40 available)

Deadline:  apply between January 1 and March 26, 2010

 

 

II.  Programs and Contests (see also “Extend Learning” portion of the Guidance Website for summer programs)

 

1.  Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Youth leadership program sponsored by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.  TLT provides an opportunity to learn more about the area and the importance of community service.  TLT brings students together with business and community leaders to identify and discuss community issues, leadership, and career opportunities; five sessions

Criteria:  Senior, outstanding academically, effective leader in community and/or school activities with an interest in furthering his/her knowledge of the Joplin region.

Deadline:  September 11, 2009 (Interviews will be held at CHCS)

 

2.  Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Criteria: Recognizes students in grades 5-12 for volunteering service in their communities.   Complete an online application and submit to Mr. Lewis by November 2, 2009.   Application can be found at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential. When asked for the access key, type the word "spirit".   A committee will review all applications submitted and select two Local Honorees and up to four runners-up.   The top high school volunteer in each state is named State Honoree in February, and two to ten runners-up in each state are named Distinguished Finalists.   Ten of the State honorees are named America's top youth volunteers of the year at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in May.

Amount:   State Honorees receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C.   National Honorees receive additional $5,000 awards, engraved gold medallions, and crystal trophies for their schools.   They also receive $5,000 grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Deadline:  November 2, 2009

 

3.  Wendy’s High School Heisman Award

Criteria:   Senior men and women, a minimum of a "B" grade average and participation in at least one of the 33 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools.  Interested students should apply at www.wendysheisman.com.   Applicatns should apply early because each online application must be reviewed and confirmed by a CHCS representative. School Winners (one male and one female) will be announced in mid-October.   State Finalists will be announced in late October, with State Winners determined in mid-November.

Amount:   Varies by level; School Winners receive a $10 Wendy's Gift Card and a Wendy's High   School Heisman patch; higher awards up to $2,500

Deadline:  October 1, 2009

 

4. Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest

Criteria:   Available to students in grades 9 – 12, prepare a 3-5 minute original essay and then record on an audio cassette.   Essays on assigned theme.   More information is available in the Guidance Center.

Deadline:  November

 

5.  Contest:   First Freedom Student Competition

Criteria:   National essay contest open to students in grades 9-12.   This year's topic is George Washington's famous statement about "mere" toleration.   Students will identify the basic principles of religious liberty espoused in this primary document and will further research and assess how well the United States has lived up to Washington's ideal.  In addition to the monetary award, the first-place winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Rhode Island in mid-August 2009 for the annual VIP reading of President Washington's historic letter.   For online registration and more details on the competetion visit www.firstfreedom.org and then click on the red button under Council News.

Amount:   $750 - $3,000

6.  Contest:   What the United States FLAG Stands For

Criteria:   Students in grades 7 - 12.   Essay contest of 350 words on "What the United States Flag Stands For."   For more information go to www.fra.org/essay.

Amount:   Grand Prize of $15,000 savings bond; plus 18 National Awards and Regional and Local Prizes

Deadline:  December CHCS 

 

7.  Oratorical Scholarship Program - A Constitutional Speech Contest (American Legion Scholarship Programs:  www.missourilegion.org)

Criteria:  The student must be unmarried and a descendant of a veteran with at least ninety days of active service.

Amount:  $1,400 - $2,000 in State winners; $1,500 - $18,000 National winners

8.  Ayn Rand Essay Contests: (www.aynrand.org/contests)

This is not a scholarship, but the prizes are large – up to $10,000.   See the web site for information and entry forms.

9.  NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award

Criteria:  Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit including, but not limited to starting a small business, participation in organizations such as DECA, FBLA, Junior Achievement and The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship; working part-time at a family-owned or other small business

Amount:  $1,000 - $10,000

10.  C.O.M.P. (Creating Original Music Project) – University of Missouri

Criteria:  Open to Missouri students, grades K-12; all entries must be original music written by the student.  For application and additional information, please visit http://music.missouri.edu/COMP

Awards:  Winning composers and their schools will be awarded cash prizes

I.  Non-Resident Service Area Scholarships

J.  Auditions

K.  National SMART Grant

Value:  $4,000 per year for 2 years (cannot exceed costs)

Criteria:  Federal aid program based on Pell eligibility.  Open to juniors and seniors.  Must have 3.0 GPA, full time student with a major in math, science or computer science.

Application:  Complete FAFSA.  Determination of eligibility will be based on federal eligibility requirements including major of study.

           

L.  Academic Competitive Grant

Value:  1st year $750, 2nd year $1300.  (cannot not exceed costs).  Check National SMART Grant for junior and senior year scholarships.

Criteria:   Federal aid program based on Pell eligibility -  must have completed a rigorous H.S. program as a full time student, 3.0 GPA and U.S. citizen.

Application:  Complete FAFSA.  Determination of eligibility will be based on federal eligibility requirements including major of study.

 

M.  Performance Awards

Value:  $50 to full scholarship  -some may be renewable

Criteria:  High potential in forensics, foreign language, journalism, music, mathematics, theatre, Athletics, etc.

Application:  Apply directly to the director or sponsor of particular activity

 

N.  Bright Flight Scholarship

Value:  $1000 per semester, renewable up to 8 semesters

Criteria:  Missouri students who score at least a 31 on the national ACT exam prior to June 30th

Application:  Automatic for Missouri residents who meet the requirement

6.  Danforth Scholars Program (Washington University, St.Louis, MO)

Criteria: Senior with outstanding academic performance and exceptional commitment to community service, leadership and personal achievements that set the student apart from his or her peers.   An individual who has substantive knowledge of the student's dedication to community and academic life must nominate the student.   When a student has been nominated, the nomination committee will notify the student and provide application materials, which must be returned by January 15, 2010.   The nominator must submit the appropriate form with a letter of nomination by October 15, 2008.   Interested students see Mrs. Kruse in the Guidance Center.

Amount:   Full or partial tuition scholarships

7.  The Chancellor's Scholarship, Missouri S&T (formerly MU at Rolla)

Criteria:   Upper 10% of class after six semesters or have a GPA of 3.75 or better; ACT by October 24 with a score of 30 or better, or SAT score of 1410 or better; strong leadership skills through school and community activities; resident of Missouri.

IV.  Regional General Scholarships

 

1.   John Dennis Scholarship

Criteria:   Students must be seniors who intend to pursue a criminal justice career and attend a Missouri college or university.   Senior must have a 2.0 GPA, show financial need, and write a paragraph detailing his/her goals ten years after high school graduation. Students interested in applying may contact the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association, 229 Madison St., Jefferson City MO 65101

2.  Missouri Insurance Education Foundation  

Eligibility:   must pursue a career in insurance, risk management, or actuarial science, which is a math-related career involving probability and statistics.

Amount:   There will be four awards of $1,500 each

3.  Access Missouri Scholarship

Eligibility: US citizen, based on family income, full time student, renewal GPA of 2.5, have an EFC of < $12000 as determined by FAFSA, not pursuing a religious degree

Amount:   Depending on EFC (Expected Family Contribution)

                                Public 2-year college:   $300 - $1,000

4.  Bright Flight

Eligibility: enrolled in public MO college, 31+ ACT or SAT Verbal of 780 and Math 790

Application: automatic if scores sent to college, otherwise notify your college and have ACT send scores (www.act.org )

Deadline:  June ACT is last chance to meet the requirement for the July 15 deadline

 

5.  Missouri Health Professional Student Loan: (www.dhss.mo.gov/HealthProfStudentLoans/faq.html )

Eligibility: Must be Missouri resident attending Missouri institution. The nursing program you are attending must have a previous State Board of Nursing pass rate of at least 80%. The loan can be forgiven by providing nursing/medical services in Missouri in an area of economic need. The more years you serve, the more of the loan that is forgiven.

6.  Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Scholarships 

(see Mrs. Kruse for more information)

 

     A.  Missouri Teacher Education Scholarship

Criteria:  be a Missouri resident, be a high school senior, or a freshman, sophomore or returning adult student at a community college or at a four-year college or university in Missouri; rank in the top 15 percent of your high school class or score in the top 15 percent on ACT or SAT; attend an approved teacher education program at a four-year college or university in Missouri.  Recipients must remain enrolled in a four-year teacher education program and are required to teach in Missouri public schools for five years.  Otherwise, the scholarship converts to a loan and the state’s portion must be repaid.

Amount:  One-time $2,000

Deadline:  Postmark February 15, 2009

 

     B.  The Missouri Minority Teaching Scholarship Program

Criteria:  Be a Missouri resident; be African American, Asian American, Hispanic American or Native American; rank in the top 25% of your class and score in the top 25% on the ACT or SAT; be enrolled in a participating, approved teacher education program at a community college or four-year college or university in Missouri

Amount:  $3,000 renewable

Deadline:  Postmark February 15, 2009

 

     C.  The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Criteria:  Be a Missouri resident; be accepted by the fall of the year following high school graduation for enrollment at a four-year institution of higher education; score in the top 10% on the ACT; file a statement of registration status certifying that you are registered with the selective service or that, for a specific reason, you are not required to be registered.

Amount:  Up to $1,500 a year

Deadline:  April 15, 2009

 

     D.  The Urban Flight and Rural Needs Scholarship

Criteria:  Be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Missouri; be a high school senior with a 2.5 GPA; selection based on GPA and financial need.  Recipients must earn a Missouri teaching certificate and teach for up to eight years in a Missouri public school with a higher than average “at-risk student population.”

Amount:  reimbursement of tuition

Deadline:  April 15, 2009

 

7.  Department of Natural Resources Environmental Education Scholarship Program

Criteria:  Senior and Missouri resident with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, planning to enroll as a full-time student in a Missouri post-secondary institution.  Qualified candidates must be pursuing a degree in one of the following areas of study:  Civil, chemical, mechanical, agricultural engineering or environmental engineering, or environmental areas such as geology, biology, wildlife management, planning, some aspect of natural resource management or a closely related field.  Application process requires three letters of recommendation and a one-page essay explaining why this scholarship is desired.  Applications may be accessed online at www.dnr.mo.gov/hr/scholarship.htm.

V.  National and Corporate Scholarships

 

1.  Wells Fargo College STEPS Scholarship Sweepstakes

Criteria:  Winners chosen during random drawings, so all students have an equal chance of winning.  See their website www.wellsfargo.com/student/planning/scholarships for the full set of rules and eligibility requirements.

Amount:  $1,000 (100 given)

Deadline:  Monthly until May 31

 

2.  United States Senate Youth Program

Criteria:  All expenses paid (2 students from each state).  Selection is based solely on the outstanding ability and demonstration qualities of leadership as elected or selected high school student officers of the current school year.  Information and applications are available at www.doe.mass.edu/ssce/senate

3.  National Merit Scholarship Program

Criteria:   Must take the PSAT during the junior year of high school.   A state level qualifying score is required for selection (selection index).   Freshmen and sophomore students may take the PSAT to practice for the junior year.   More information is available at www.nationalmerit.org

4.  ARTS Recognition and Talent Search

5.  Coca-Cola Scholarship

6.  Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program

Criteria:   Senior with financial need who has exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.   Minimum GPA of 2.0, with involvement in co-curricular and community service activities. Commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.   Submit an online application at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

7.  Imagine America Scholarship

Criteria: Student must be seeking a vocational/technical education.   Minimum GPA 2.5, financial need, and demonstrate voluntary community service during the senior year.   Information is available at www.imagine-america.org

8. Toyota Community Scholars Program

Criteria:   Seniors who enroll at a 4-year college or university.   GPA 3.0 or higher.   Be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community.   Applications  are available in the Guidance Office.   Only one student may be nominated from CHCS each year.   More information is available at http://www.toyota.com/communityscholars

Indicate your interest in this scholarship by writing a paragraph stating what you have done to impact the school and/or community in a positive way.   This should be turned in to the Guidance Office at least 2 weeks prior to the deadline.   Include information about a service organization you are actively involved in.   A committee will review all candidates to determine a nomination.

Amount:   $10,000 - $20,000 (payable over 4 years)

9.  Target All Around Scholarships

10.  AXA Achievement Scholarship

11.  Chapel of Four Chaplains

Criteria:   Each scholarship has its own criteria and qualifications relating to the specific scholarship.   They center on creativity, expression, grammar, and spelling, originality, service, organization, etc.   Applications are available at www.fourchaplains.org

12.  SAE Engineering Scholarship Application

15.  Gates Millennium Scholars Program

Criteria:   African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American seniors who are citizens, national or legal permanent residents; cumulative GPA of 3.3 on an un-weighted 4.0 scale; demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities; meet federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; hav e completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form).   The online application process is available at www.gmsp.org.

Eligibility: All applicants must read the “Fire Sprinkler Essay” about automatic fire sprinklers and take a ten-question multiple-choice test.   This is an open-book test and you may print out the paper beforehand for reference during testing.   For each question answered correctly, students will receive one entry into a drawing for one of ten $2,000 scholarships.   For each question answered incorrectly, you will be given one more chance at the end of the exam to answer those questions correctly.

C.  Joseph J. Frank Scholarship:

D.  Charles L. Bacon Memorial Scholarship:

Amount: two at $500

Eligibility: Must be current member of The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, or the Sons of The American Legion, or a descendant of a member of any of the three, unmarried, and be enrolled as a full time college student.

 

E.  Erman W. Taylor Memorial Scholarship:

Eligibility: Must be a descendant of a veteran who served in the armed forces, be a full-time college student, and submit an essay of 500 words or less on the subject:
